🏗️ Weekly Warm-Up: Our Foundation on Full Display!
It’s going to be a busy week at Winkler, but it’s also the kind of week when the strong foundation we have built with our Wolves will be on full display! 🐺💛
We’ll begin by celebrating the incredible people who make a difference for students every day with World Teachers’ Day on Monday and National Coaches Day on Tuesday—thank you to those who teach, coach, encourage, and challenge our Wolves to be their best!
We’ll also be working hard on the field and in the classroom, pushing through challenges and showing what we know with softball and football games on Monday and Wednesday and benchmark testing on Tuesday and Thursday.
Then comes a jam-packed Friday! Please remember that Friday is our first Early Release Day of the year, with students dismissed at 1:00 p.m. It also marks the end of the grading period and will include our PBIS and attendance incentive celebration and our first Club Day of the year!
It’s a lot to pack into five days, but we know our Wolves are ready to finish strong.
Thank you, families, for continuing to encourage, support, and partner with us as we keep Building a Better Future—from Foundation to Finish! 🏗️🐺💛

Students have completed their Math benchmark. This week, they will complete Reading and 8th Grade Science. These assessments help teachers see what students have learned so far and identify areas where students may need additional support or enrichment.
Benchmark Schedule:
-
Tuesday, October 6: Reading — Grades 6, 7 & 8
-
Thursday, October 8: 8th Grade Science
Families can help students prepare by:
💤 Making sure students get a good night's sleep before testing.
🍳 Starting the day with a healthy breakfast.
⏰ Arriving at school on time and ready to learn.
📱 Reinforcing the importance of turning off all electronics and leaving them in their bookbag.
💪 Reminding students to do their best, take their time, and use strategies they have learned in class.
❤️ Offering encouragement and reminding them that a benchmark is an opportunity to show what they know—not a reason to stress!
Thank you for partnering with us to help our Wolves put their best paw forward! 🐺

We are entering the last week of the quarter! As we wrap up the first quarter, please encourage your student to finish strong, complete any outstanding assignments, and stay focused through the end of the week.
📅 This Friday, October 9, is a 1:00 p.m. early dismissal. Please make sure your family has a plan for your student’s early dismissal and transportation home.
Thank you for helping our Wolves finish the quarter strong! 🐺💛

We’re celebrating students who are demonstrating positive behavior, responsibility, and strong academic habits! Students who qualify for our PBIS incentive must meet all three criteria:
- ⭐ Zero office referrals
- ⭐ 4 or fewer MIRs (minor incident reports)
- ⭐ 5 or fewer missing assignments
Students who meet these expectations will be invited to enjoy time playing with friends and a sweet treat as a celebration of their hard work and positive choices!
We are proud of our Wolves who continue to do the right thing and make positive choices! 🐺💛
|
We’re excited for our first Club Day of the school year on Friday, October 9! Students had the opportunity to rank their top five club choices, and they will be placed in and attend one of those choices on Friday.
Club Day is a fun opportunity for students to explore their interests, try something new, and connect with classmates outside of their regular classes. Throughout the school year, students will participate in a variety of clubs led by HWMS staff.
Club Day takes place during the school day on scheduled Early Release days, so there is no additional transportation or after-school commitment for families.
We can’t wait to see our Wolves learning, connecting, and having fun together! 🐺💛

The October IB Learner Profile Attribute is: Thinker
Students who are thinkers exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions.
How can parents help to develop students who are thinkers at home?
- Encourage your child to engage in pretend play; children are naturally curious and imaginative.
- Pause and wait...give your child time to think for him/herself; be patient.
- Don't intervene immediately; it's okay to let your child explore on their own.
- Ask open-ended questions.
- Help children develop hypotheses.
- Encourage critical thinking in new and different ways.
- Encourage your child to retell stories, put on plays with story props.
- Leave time for unstructured play.
- Encourage your child to play and explore outside.
- Encourage Creative Thinking.
- Let your child experience failure, and then let him/her figure out how to turn their failure into a positive learning experience.
- Provide opportunities to visit Children's Museums and Libraries.
