🏗️ Weekly Warm-Up: Finishing the Quarter Strong!

As we head into another important week at Winkler, we want to begin with a huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our PTSO Sponsor a Wolf fundraiser! 🐺💛 Your support—and our students’ enthusiasm—has made this fundraiser a lot of fun, and you’ll definitely want to be on the lookout during lunch on Tuesday as some of our teachers and administrators get duct-taped to the wall! 😄 There may even be an add-on opportunity for students to purchase their own piece of tape to join the lunchtime fun and add a little more to our fundraising total!

We’ll start the week with a Reflection Day on Monday, giving students an opportunity to review their progress as the grading period comes to a close and identify any missing or incomplete assignments. With the deadline for most assignments and make-up work coming at the end of this week, we encourage families to check Infinite Campus, talk with your student about their progress, and give them that extra nudge to finish strong! 📚

This week also marks the beginning of our first-quarter benchmark assessments, with Math taking place on Thursday. These assessments will give our teachers valuable information about what students have learned and where additional support or enrichment may be needed as we continue Building a Better Future—from Foundation to Finish! 🏗️🐺💛

School News and Updates

📚 Fall Benchmark Assessments Are Coming Up!

Over the next two weeks, students will take their Fall Benchmark 1 assessments in Math, Reading, and 8th Grade Science. These assessments help teachers see what students have learned so far and identify areas where students may need additional support or enrichment.

Benchmark Schedule:
  • Thursday, October 1: Math — Grades 6, 7 & 8
  • Tuesday, October 6: Reading — Grades 6, 7 & 8
  • Thursday, October 8: 8th Grade Science

Families can help students prepare by:
💤 Making sure students get a good night's sleep before testing.
🍳 Starting the day with a healthy breakfast.
⏰ Arriving at school on time and ready to learn.
📱 Reinforcing the importance of turning off all electronics and leaving them in their bookbag.
💪 Reminding students to do their best, take their time, and use strategies they have learned in class.
❤️ Offering encouragement and reminding them that a benchmark is an opportunity to show what they know—not a reason to stress!

Thank you for partnering with us to help our Wolves put their best paw forward! 🐺

🚗 Morning Drop-Off Reminder

A friendly reminder that student drop-off begins at 8:40 a.m. each morning. Please do not drop students off before 8:40 a.m., as staff supervision is not available until that time. Thank you for helping us keep our morning arrival safe and organized!

Club Day

Club Day is a fun opportunity for students to explore their interests, try something new, and connect with classmates outside of their regular classes. Throughout the school year, students will participate in clubs led by HWMS staff. Club Day takes place during the school day on the Early Release scheduled days, so there is no additional transportation or after-school commitment for families. Our first Club Day will be Friday, October 9th.

Students will view the Club Day lists this week and will have the opportunity to select their top five club choices on Wednesday. We will do our best to place students in one of their preferred clubs. Because clubs have limited space, students are not guaranteed their first choice, but Mrs. Kiser does her best to place them in one of their five choices.

Club Day Needs

Our Club Day clubs are always looking for ways to get creative with donated materials! If you have LEGO bricks that your children have outgrown or no longer use, our LEGO Building Club would love to give them a new life. We are also collecting clean, gently used T-shirts for our Upcycling Crew, where students will transform old shirts into fun, creative projects.

Science Fair

HWMS will be hosting a Science Fair this year! The Science Fair is about much more than creating a display board. Students will choose a question that interests them, conduct research, design and carry out an investigation, collect and analyze data, and communicate what they discover. Along the way, they will develop valuable skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, perseverance, organization, and communication.
To help students stay organized, we will use a Canvas Science Fair course where students can find instructions, examples, important deadlines, and project checkpoints.

Interested students should review this Science Fair Infographic and enroll in the HWMS Science Fair Canvas course.

IB Program Information

The September IB Learner Profile Attribute is: Inquirer

IB Learners who are inquirers develop natural curiosity, build independent research skills, and foster a lifelong passion for learning.

How can parents help to develop students who are Inquirers at home?
  • Visit places that spark inquiry, like a museum, park, or nature preserve.
  • Explore the areas of your child's interest by visiting the library to borrow books.
  • Develop an understanding of the Internet. Work with your son or daughter when the Internet is being used and try to instill the understanding that some Internet sites are not reputable.
  • Model being an inquirer. Ask questions and wonder!
  • Praise your child for asking a question.
  • Have your child jot down their wonders in a journal. Spend time researching these wonders!

Positivity Project This Week

This year, Cabarrus County Schools will continue implementing the social-emotional learning program called Positivity Project. All students in grades K - 12 will be focusing on one skill each week.

This Week's P2 Topic is Forgiveness. This means letting go of anger toward those who have done wrong and accepting that people make mistakes.
